Passengers

By Jason Beale

Doors behind me sliding shut

before I have a chance to doubt,

a carriage full of lowered heads

that lunges forward on its route,

I scramble for an empty pew

and scan the bodies side by side,

a random mass of human souls

inside a train an ocean wide—

these passengers in winter dress

are sheltered from the foggy world,

and look for life inside their phones

while waiting out the morning cold.
