Kyoto Maple Haiku

By Andrew Lansdown

Striking the timber

walls of the Buddhist temple—

flames from the maple.

Temple veranda—

a maple leaf guttering

in the fire bucket.

Lit again at last—

the worn stone lantern under

the maple branches.

Not even the pond

can extinguish the embers

blown from the maple.
