when the sun comes up

By Alana Kelsall

after What I believe by Kevin Brophy

I believe:

that the sun doesn’t care who it hangs with

that my mind is in a story loop binning moments of it dusting them off

that I get distracted at odd times and have no idea where I’ve been

that the universe doesn’t ask who is in charge

that I am unfinished

that our reptilian brain is busy at all hours at the back of our neck

that we go to sleep to stop our mind colliding with itself

that one day I’ll know how to live

that the dead come back and hug me which my body feels as a shiver
